Warmly received by a capacity audience at Music Hall Saturday evening, the Pro Arte Quartet offered two amazing works. Beethoven's six-movement String Trio in E-Flat Major, Op. 3 features such revolutionary harmonies, rhythms and string techniques that it's hard to believe he was only 22 when he wrote it. The playing was simply wonderful. The Pro Arte programmed the trio when it appeared violinist Norman Paulu might not be able to rejoin the group on account of nerve damage to his left hand following open-heart surgery last summer. But fortunately he has recovered and took part in Dvorak's Quartet in C Major, Op.61. This too is a remarkable piece, full of passion, lyricism, rhythmic invention and virtuoso style. This was one of the most enjoyable chamber-music concerts I've heard in ages.
