Artistrio Vartan Manoogian, violin Uri Vardi, cello Judit Jaimes, piano |
A half-full house at Mills Hall Friday evening warmly applauded Artistrio, consisting of master violinist Vartan Manoogian, cellist Uri Vardi, and pianist Judit Jaimes. The solo piano performance of Schubert's Impromptus, Op. 90, which opened the concert, was remarkably unlyrical and generally rushed. In terms of musical excitement, the program's high point was Kodaly's Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7. It's a major work in every regard, and it's hard to imagine a better performance than this one. In the Brahms Piano Trio in B Major, Op. 8, there was inspired playing by all three artists, though here too the pianist occasionally passed up opportunities for greater lyricism.
